It is from the back of India. It was already a popular spice among ancient peoples. It was also known to the Hungarians who conquered it, but it only began to spread in royal and aristocratic cuisine in Hungary in the Middle Ages. Today it is a spice known and widely used all over the world.
The celebrated writer of Rome, Pliny the Elder, did not like it, but despite his displeasure, pepper soon became the most important item in trade between India and Rome. In 408, the western Gothic king Alarik I, who was besieging the city, asked for pepper as a military arm in addition to gold, silver and textiles.
In the Middle Ages, when it became more difficult to trade, its value reached gold, and accordingly money was used as a substitute currency. A 13–14. century, landlords often asked their tenants for rent in pepper. Its trade played a significant role in the flourishing of Venice and Genoa.
With the decline of the Ottoman Empire, trade became easier again, and consumption and cultivation also plummeted; world production reached 100,000 tons per year by the last quarter of the 20th century.
